Live "Sherlock Holmes Week" Mentalism & Deduction Web Event with Joe Riggs!

Sunday August 5th, the last day of Sherlock Holmes Week, let’s have some fun…

That’s right friends, we will be bringing Sherlock Holmes Week to a close with some live Mentalism & Sherlockian fun! This event is open to everyone who would like to attend. I will be on video interacting with you via an open chat window visible to everyone. Whether you’re coming to interact or just watch the fun, by all means do stop by and tell your friends about it!

As many of you know from my original blog post here, I’ve sent two separate “predictions” out; one toSherlockology and the other, a strange phrase, to The Baker Street Babes. If everything goes well, this will all culminate in an amazing tapestry of events during the webcast that should be amazing and interactive for everyone. Special guests Luke Kuhns & Elena Kitzantides will also be present, helping to choose questions and moderate, etc.The theme is, of course, Sherlock Holmes Week. The purposes are: to have some fun, answer your burning questions, and to raise awareness for The Undershaw Preservation Trust.

Laura AndersonWinner of the “Cryptic Riddle Contest,” Laura Anderson, will of course be in attendence and will be going live on video with me toward the end of the webcast for the second and final experiment.

She, nor either of the groups that have been sent aforementioned “predictions” have any clue about what exactly I will be trying to do. This is as it should be. What’s a Sherlock Holmes event without a little mystery?

The event will be hosted by Vokle and users can attend on my blog by visiting the “Webcast Event”  page at the top…

The Cryptic Riddle Has Been Solved! Here is the Solution, Winner & Runner Up!

I am very proud to announce that after 48 hours of brainstorming, reading and re-reading the riddles, we have a winner! Over 300 people submitted their brilliant guesses and explanations behind them. However, in the end, only two people named the correct person and properly deconstructed the cryptic questions. Thanks to everyone who submitted answers. You guys are amazing!

Elena (@ElenaKSays) and I both worked hard on these puzzles to ensure that they were both difficult and possible. We put an enormous amount of thought into every line, word and phrase. The breakdown of the riddle and the explanation of the answer will likely surprise many. Yet, we must give credit where it is due…

Sherlock Super Sleuths! It's day two, this was meant to be hard. ;) The second riddle is here! Some, will crack this...

Over 200+ answers have now been received; most of which have brilliant reasons behind them, yet none completely fit the riddle/contest. Based on the most popular answers, and the areas with which people are having the most difficulty, we’ve carefully crafted the second riddle to be just as cryptic, yet to point the super sleuths out there in the proper direction. I’ve just posted it in the comments section of the original post on my Facebook fan page here: www.facebook.com/ilikejoeriggs

Expect The Unexpected At This Live Webcast Event! Q&A, ‪Mentalism‬, ‪Deduction‬ and A Cryptic Contest! ‪Sherlock Style...

imageWith two weeks left to Sherlock Holmes Week its time to release information on a very special live event and contest I’ve been asked to run. I’ve been contemplating this for awhile now and things are starting to get pretty exciting!

Following the revealing interview with Ross K Foad (here) a few weeks ago, I’ve been inundated with friends and fans around the world asking if I’d be prepared to do a similar live event with them. At the same time I’ve just become an ambassador for theUndershaw Preservation Trust. Seems like combining the two is perfect…

So yes, here we go! Stay with me because quite a few things are going to be happening at once to make this event the most fun it can be for all of you.

Firstly within the next 24 hours I will be mailing a special package to Emma and Leif at Sherlockology. This will imagebe a major prediction for the live event. They will be guarding this package and are even talking about streaming the package live everyday until the event. In either case it will be far from my hands and safe in London.

To keep things above board and as fair as possible I will imagealso be sending a curious ‘phrase’ to Curly from The Baker Street Babes. She has agreed to keep this phrase an absolute secret and to only reveal it during the coming event. That’s Sherlockology and The Baker Street Babes keeping me honest. Now let’s find out what all of this is for, shall we?

In honor of Sherlock Holmes Week and the Undershaw Preservation Trust I will be taking part in a live webcast event. I will be live on video answering your questions and talking about what it is I do and shedding some light on various subjects. During the webcast I’m going to be attempting two very exciting feats. You won’t want to miss these demonstrations! The details are as follows:

One week from today I’ll post a VERY cryptic question about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Home, Undershaw, on myFacebook page and the first person who answers it correctly will get to go ‘live’ with me at the end of the webcast for a very personal and hopefully amazing Mentalism & Deduction experiment for all to see. The winner will have nothing embarrassing take place or be used. If you haven’t joined my Facebook page already do so now and keep an eye out for the cryptic question to come.

The other demonstration I mentioned will involve randomly selected people from the chat window during thwebcast event. The special package sent to Sherlockology and the curious phrase sent to The Baker Street Babes will both come into play and while I can never be 100% positive of how things will turn out, I’ve got a very good feeling that you’ll want to see what all of this will culminate into!

The rules are simple, if you haven’t already then like my Facebook page to keep an eye out for the cryptic question next week. Also it wouldn’t hurt to clue up on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s former home Undershaw. The question could be about the house, the people Conan Doyle entertained there (like Bram Stoker for example) or the recent court case fight to stop developers destroying the house. If you wish to take part and solve this, make sure you are prepared to join me on the webcast for some harmless fun, I promise. Read more…

Millions of Fans Gear Up for the Annual Sherlock Holmes Week 30th July - 5th August

Millions of Sherlock Holmes fans worldwide will take part in a week of celebration of the world’s most famous detective in the first annual Sherlock Holmes Week from 30th July – 5th August. Holmes has had a resurgence in the last two years with two major Hollywood motion pictures and the success of BBC Sherlock. The week is backed by the main societies and organisations in the world. http://www.sherlockholmesweek.com is the website where fans can register their local events and take part in competitions.

The motto of the week is “By the fans, for the fans,” and local groups are being encouraged to celebrate the week in their own way — from special screenings to picnics. Events have been confirmed across the USA, UK and as far afield as Thailand and Canada. The theme of this year’s week is to promote the Save Undershaw campaign — a trust striving to save the former home of the creator of Sherlock Holmes – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (http://www.saveundershaw.com and http://www.facebook.com/saveundershaw). The campaign was recently captured in the book “Sherlock’s Home – The Empty House,” which featured contributions from Holmes legends Stephen Fry and Mark Gatiss.

There are two major competitions. The Sherlock Holmes Fashion Awards 2012 on 2nd August enables fans to design costumes for characters from the first two series of BBC Sherlock. High quality entries will be submitted for coverage on Crafty Crafty and their sister site Dollymix.

Steampunk Holmes is the most eagerly awaited interactive book in history. Several years in the making, this Steampunk version of Sherlock Holmes will have a series of books in all formats, but most stunning on the iPad. This competition for Holmes fans gives them the chance to be a part of publishing history and have their artwork included in the first book:Steampunk Holmes – The Legacy of The Nautilus. Information on entering the competitions is on the website.

Supporters of the week include the top fan sites Sherlockology, The Baker Street Babes and I Hear of Sherlock. Special guest will be leading mentalist Joe Riggs aka The Real Sherlock Holmes.

So who can get involved? Any Sherlock Holmes fan, wherever they are. The team have already been contacted by fans as far away as Japan and China. It seems that the popularity of Sherlock Holmes is truly global.

The Memory Palace - From Sherlock Holmes to Designing Your Own...

The follow article & lesson is taken directly from my new book “Psychic Lies & Mental Spies.” Enjoy!

“I consider that a man’s brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it.” –Sherlock Holmes in A Study in Scarlet.

That‘s right. Arthur Conan Doyle was on the right track when he attributed his fictional consulting detective‘s ‘mental powers‘ to be the result of a well-organized ‘memory attic‘ system. While the ‘Memory Palace‘ system that is widely employed today isn‘t necessarily associated with Sherlock Holmes with the exception of the BBC’s “Sherlock.” I believe the above quote should be given the credit it deserves. Now, let‘s get on to what the Memory Palace (or Method of Loci) actually is. This is going to get historically deep for a moment, but then we will break it down so you can create yours, NOW!

The Method of Loci (loci is the plural form of the Latin word ―locus, meaning ―place or ―location), also called the Memory Palace, is a mnemonic device introduced in ancient Roman rhetorical treatises (as described in the anonymous Rhetorica ad Herennium, Cicero’s De Oratore, and Quintilian’s Institutio Oratoria). It relies on memorized spatial relationships to establish order and recollect memorial content. The term is most often found in specialized works on psychology, neurobiology and memory; though it was used in the same general way at least as early as the first half of the nineteenth century in works on rhetoric, logic and philosophy.

The Method of Loci is also commonly called the ―mental walk. In basic terms, it is a method of memory enhancement which uses visualization to organize and recall information. Many memory contest champions claim to use this technique in order to recall faces, digits, and lists of words. These champions‘ successes have little to do with brain structure or intelligence, but more to do with their technique of using regions of their brain that have to do with spatial learning. Those parts of the brain that contribute most significantly to this technique include the Medial Parietal Cortex, Retrosplenial Cortex, and the right posterior Hippocampus.
In other words, the ability to do this does not lie in preexisting intelligence, but rather it is a learned tool.

CREATING YOUR MEMORY PALACE
The whole memory palace technique is based on the fact that we‘re extremely good at remembering places we know. So, the first step is to create a memory palace of your choosing in your mind‘s eye. A memory palace is essentially a physical location that you are very familiar with such as your home, or route to work; it can be any place you know well as long as you can clearly visualize each room or landmark within your memory palace with little to no effort. Everyone has a place they can choose. It is entirely up to you, choose your first ‘memory palace‘ and map it out well in your mind. Really visualize this place, take the route, walk through the house, and your palace will be established.

DEFINING YOUR ROUTE
The second step is to trace a clearly defined route through your memory palace and visualize particular objects along the way. If you are considering your home for example, your route may start with your front door. You may enter into a hallway and notice a mirror hanging on the wall. Start with one object per room and follow an easy path (such as, left to right) until you are back at your starting point.
Practice following this route in your memory palace, making an effort to remember each specific object in order. This shouldn‘t be hard to do if you choose a place deeply embedded within your mind; consider the house you grew up in. Each object you see and encounter is known as a ‘memory peg‘. Start with one object or ‘memory peg‘ for every room in your palace, or every stop on your route. A simple example would be: you walk through the front door and see the coat rack, then you walk into the kitchen and notice the stove, then you walk into the garage and notice the ladder. Coat rack (front door), stove (kitchen), and ladder (garage): already, you have three ‘memory pegs‘ in three different rooms in your Memory Palace.

USING YOUR MEMORY PEGS
Now think of something that you‘d like to remember, such as a shopping list or your agenda for the week ahead. Place items in a particular order and integrate each with a memory peg (object) within your memory palace. It helps to conceptualize objects as being bizarre or perhaps cartoon-like at this stage. Memory does, after all, perform best when operating in a strong, visual way.

Since we created three pegs in the above example, the coat rack, the stove and the ladder; we can now utilize those pegs. If your grocery list only consisted of three items such as milk, bread and cheese you would then ‘peg‘ them one at a time. Your first peg in the example is the coatrack; you walk through the front door and see the coatrack. So all you have to do is visually connect ‘milk‘ and ‘coatrack.‘ It is important to make your images as animated and bizarre as possible, so see the coatrack spewing milk from all its ends. At this point you would take a moment to really ‘see‘ this image, and burn it into your mind. Now you would connect ‘bread‘ to ‘stove.‘ Keeping in mind that merely getting bread out of a stove isn‘t dramatic enough for memory. So I would see a man beating the stove to pieces with a gigantic loaf of bread. Done and done. Now just connect ‘cheese‘ to ‘ladder‘ i.e. A man is trying to climb the ladder and failing because it‘s made of cheese.
Your simple list would now be committed to memory.

At the store, all you ever need to do is walk through your mental memory palace and your grocery list will fly right back at you. You will walk through the door and see milk spewing from the coatrack, then you would walk into the kitchen only to find a man beating the stove with a ridiculous loaf of bread, you then walk into the garage and see a man climbing the cheese ladder. Milk, bread and cheese is a pretty easy list to remember without a palace, yet you can begin see the power of the method.

The amazing thing is that your memory palace is EVERY bit as effective at storing enormous amounts of information as it is storing very small bits. Now that you have your own memory palace, expand it. The sky is the limit here.

In my book  I delve deeper into the techniques of the memory palace, including how to store enormous amounts of information in very little time. If you’re interested it is on Amazon in paperback and kindle format.

One of Sherlock Holmes’s defects—if, indeed, one may call it a defect—was that he was exceedingly loath to communicate his full plans to any other person until the instant of their fulfillment. Partly it came no doubt from his own masterful nature, which loved to dominate and surprise those who were around him. Partly also from his professional caution, which urged him never to take any chances. The result, however, was very trying for those who were acting as his agents and assistants.

I actually find this quality to be quite useful in my profession. ;-) But that’s just me.

For those of you interested in Sherlock’s use of a Mind Palace in ‘The Hounds of Baskerville’, you may find this Open University interview with Derren Brown enlightening (skip to 1 minute in for details on Memory Palaces.) Derren also discussed this subject in more depth in his book ‘Tricks of the Mind’.

Although many people have credited Derren for inspiring Mark Gatiss to include this in his episode in Sherlock series 2, he in fact confirmed on Twitter, “I first came across it in ‘Hannibal’, but Derren has been a help in so many ways.”

Acclaimed Mentalist Joe Riggs (@WorldOfJoeRiggs) has also written an excellent blog on Memory Palaces – or Mind Palaces as Sherlock has it - and how to design your own.

There’s also a short video on YouTube on how to improve your memory with the memory palace technique HERE

For the creation of Mind Palaces, Mind Huts, Mind Igloos, or Mind Yurts.

I used to think I was an expert, till I realized that these “Huts, Igloos & Yurts” exist! haha.  But in all seriousness, thanks to you and sherlockology both for blogging, and reblogging this. As well thanks to everyone who have taken the time to watch Mr. Browns wonderful video and dive into my article etc..  Thanks so much. -Joe Riggs (@WorldOfJoeRiggs)
